Data manipulation




Data is stored in tables with fieldnames across the first row. The Fields containing data in the columns below. A record is a row of data in the table. Tables can be linked to other tables, enabling data. Once data has been entered to the table the database can be in use. A query (question) is used to extract specific information from a database. Reports are used to get printouts of the results of a query or from a database.

Different types of data


Text/Alphanumeric: Text. There may be a limit how long the data is - often 256 characters.
Number: Any number type. It will be possible to specify how many decimal places to use. A number with no decimal is called an integer. A number that has decimal places is called a real number.
Date/Time: A date. formats can vary.
Currency: For example $.
Boolean/Logical: Only two alternatives. Yes/No, on/off, true/false, m/f.




Lessons and practice:


After finishing every Activity. Save the database under a new name and put it into the Onedrive folder Data-manipulation.

  1. Open Excel and create a New empty Spreadsheet.
  2. Save your file as: Example: Stefan 11c Data Manipulation Task1.xls
  3. Plan your topic. What content should there be?
    1. At least 20 keys or records
    2. At least 5 field Names
    3. At least 2 different types of data
      1. Boolean/Logical
      2. Alphanumeric/text
      3. Numeric
      4. Currency
      5. Date
  4. Make your database look good :-)
    1. Set background-colour
    2. Format Table
    3. Correct headings for the columns (Field names)
    4. Make sure there is a Data-filter
    5. Use conditional formatting an maybe Cell Styles
    6. Use borders
    7. Make Fonts readable
    8. Insert an floating image
    9. Put a headline to the Table.
  5. Save to your One-drive then finished!

Save your document including name, class and activity in file-name.
